Abstract In 1995 MORI began trials of CAPI hardware and software. Some early lessons were learnt and at the beginning of 1996 MORI went live with Windows based pen tablet interviewing. In the last 10 years this decision has reaped many rewards as the technology has proven to be well suited to MORIs combination of large and complex social surveys and shorter quota and Omnibus surveys. Indeed we recently completed our 1 millionth interview and in 2004 CAPI interviewing contributed more than 65% of all our face-to-face interviewing.
This paper shares the experience and reveals many of the lessons learnt. It also takes a light hearted look at what in 1995 some considered to be mobile! We look at how the software developed through the years and highlights some of the weaknesses of solutions in place.
More recently we have developed a mobile CAPI solution (M-CAPI) to satisfy the shorter non-residential surveys such as exit and visitor surveys. The paper reveals our initial experiences of this and looks at some of the advantages and disadvantages of the hardware and software of M-CAPI against it's more traditional parent. However, given the more lightweight design of M-CAPI surveys, is it even fair to compare them?
As we move into our second decade of mobile interviewing we consider in which direction MORI are likely to go with CAPI and predicts what may happen in the industry as a whole. With powerful hardware coming in smaller boxes and the increasing reliability of the mobile internet, the next 10 years could prove just as fascinating as the last.
